Mono is sufficient for the comprehension of music - if that's what you're into.
The curious thing about stereo, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, x.1 sound is that they seek to recreate a sonic reality that really only reality can create. For me, this is why good mono is sufficient. Stereo is just nice to have.
(A corollary are the mega-pixels wars in digital photography and digital motion picture work. We've abandoned film, only to spend all our efforts rushing back to the resolution and latitude of it - this time, in digital form).
