Why I prefer Audiogon

Given this is a first post and it's defending Audiogon, I'm bound to be called a shill, but here goes anyway...

Audiogon is the place where people who are serious about wanting to buy or sell audio equipment do business with each other. I have nothing against Asylum Trader, but it's not that place. That is why I go to Audiogon when I want to buy or sell used gear (not for the forums which are rubbish).

As far as I can tell, the main appeal of Asylum Trader and CA/US/UK Audio Mart is that they are free. Audiogon charges ~2%. Some people think that's too much, use loopholes to try to avoid or delay paying it, and cry foul every time Audiogon changes their sales policies to increase the likelihood of collecting their payment.

I personally think that anybody who isn't willing to pay a $20 fee on a $1000 sale is either too much of a tightwad to be worth dealing with or isn't really motivated to sell. Is there a term for the seller equivalent of a tire kicker? I see fewer ads from such people on Audiogon than free sites.

As a seller, I don't list an item unless I really want to sell it, and when I do I want a lot of interested buyers to see it. That means Audiogon or eBay, and Audiogon is by far the preferable choice.

Another positive aspect of using Audiogon is that they (finally) have a defined sales process with ground rules. It has made recent transactions go faster and smoother for me. I also think it reduces the chance of disputes, and makes it clearer who is at fault when there is a dispute. I also like the fact that they are trying to do something to discourage the scammers and abusers of the system. They have been warning users when their account is accessed from a different location, they have been much quicker to take down fraudulent listings lately, and cracking down on people who use Buy It Now just to highjack a listing while they make up their mind whether or not to buy.

I don't know why people pine for the "glory days" of Audiogon back when they were providing Craigslist level service for 1% of your sale. They have gotten a lot better since then, albeit with some hiccups like prematurely rolling out a buggy site upgrade.

I don't know what the big deal is with requiring a credit card to sell or use Buy It Now. A credit card should be required to use Buy It Now, otherwise as a seller I would never offer the option. And if you don't want your CC charged for the commission, use a flat fee listing. Also, Audiogon doesn't handle or store your CC info, their payments processor does. Like most small-medium e-commerce sites, they use a 3rd party internet payments processor.
