RE: Has High Performance audio in the home become an OLD MAN'S game!

High performance audio is driven by the pursuit of the "Holy Grail", the faithful reproduction of a musical event. I suspect many audiophiles can recall the mesmerizing impact of listening to a well-tuned setup in a hi-fi shop or in the basement of some wealthy uncle, and thinking "Man! I want to have that kind of sound at home some day" The mission/hobby becomes an attempt to reach and surpass that little slice of audio heaven

Without actually experiencing it, its hard to commit oneself to the pursuit. And unfortunately younger generations are not getting the opportunity to hear it. Unfortunately many high-end audio stores are contributing to the problem, with poorly set-up rooms, pushing outrageously-priced gear that leaves the potentially serious listener thinking "$50,000 for that! - hell, my computer system sounds better!"

To keep high performance audio from dying its slow inexorable death, the industry needs to do better in exposing younger generations to the sound of real music played in real space. Because it's that magical "sleight of ear" that justifies the journey.
