The phenomenal growth of the Headphone and dedicated Headphone amp market ? It would seem to contradict the long term trend towards portability, and decreasing quality of reproduction for the masses.
I agree with your premise in general and I observed a long time ago that HT has largely replaced "the stereo" as the aspirational entertainment purchase in the home. There has always been a conspicuous consumption element to electronics purchases for the home. It is much easier to justify spending household funds on a 50inch flat screen that will be seen by everyone entering the room, and can be enjoyed by the "family" than spending money on a dedicated 2 ch system, with but one sweet spot. In a sense this reality may be what is driving the Headphone market. The expenditure can be very modest to realize a tangible improvement. Headphones are solitary by design, but can also be enjoyed anywhere there is a table and chair. Both features make them very family friendly.
