Interesting subject and hard to get an understanding of where the young people are with regards to "higher fidelity".
I live in a college town with a very healthy music scene. The college kids I know and talk to are no more or less interested in music than any other time. But the way they consume it is completely different than my experience at their age. My impression is that their taste is very eclectic. They are just as likely go see a electro trance than a blugrass. But whatever they listen to- it is not on the radio. Where my taste was steered by the radio programming there's is completely organic.
The official music stores are all gone but one. And that one is full of used turntables for sale?? And all the second hand stores have used LP's for sale. Don't know what to make of that?
The kids that are into hifi are interested in finding the best "bootleg" digital version and trading those for other "best" versions. It's all very "off" market that is so prevalent that its not so black market anymore. It is the market. It's more about the actual music (file) than the device or gear you use to listen to it with.
So... not a lot of conclusions here but these are my observations. I will finish by saying that the 30 somethings are different than the 20 somethings. Hard to describe the difference but I think it has to do with how long smart phones and Itunes have been around and how pervasive they are when it's "all you know".
