Any reasonably efficient, dynamic system can make a solo folksinger or guitarist sound "larger than life" if you turn up the volume, and can get the dimensions of a small ensemble just about life size. But relatively few systems, even big horn speakers in a large room, can do justice to a pipe organ, symphony orchestra, or big brass band -- the soundstage will always be somewhat miniaturized compared to the real thing live.
A lot of studio recordings, particularly in pop, folk, and jazz, are mixed and processed to make certain instruments or voices sound bigger than life. Think of Enya, the way her voice is typically chorused and drenched in artificial reverb. Or any number of records where the drum kit is multi-miked and panned across the entire width of the soundstage. Inaccurate as hell, but apparently what the artist and producer wanted.
