I've used both services a lot over recent years & agree with the poster who suggested that it's the staff at the local depot & your local driver that makes the big difference - that's certainly been true in my case.
I've not had billing problems with UPS but drivers from both companies have left "delivery attempted" notes when I was at home precisely to meet the delivery. One driver I became friendly with admitted that this is a tactic drivers sometimes use when they're behind schedule or have an unusually large number of deliveries to make (leaving a note is much quicker than making a delivery) - or if the package is heavy or unwieldy.
I've developed a strong preference for UPS but think it was largely because I have a great driver on my route.
