CES Day 2

The most unique toy and a product that I believe represents the future of music delivery, was found in the Wavelength Audio room. Gordon Rankin says, "For years we've been struggling with the error prose S/PDIF interface. When the DAC receives an error, it just plays the last smaple again. Error prone systems tend to sound sterile and unrealistic. Computer interfaces such as USB and Firewire, on the other hand, have error recovery. Therefore, all the information on a disk is preserved and the sound is more true to the original." He then presented the Cosecant DAC, that uses the same Transcendental DAC technology as his Cosine DAC. It also has the same two transformer coupled output as the Cosine. Any computer that has the USB interface will work, No software is required. Simply specify the output as the Cosecant and you're done....perfect output forever. Software such as Apple's ITunes can be used to create a playlist or just play any CD. The unit is priced at $3,500.

Other standout rooms that should not be missed include Brian Cheney of VPMS demostrating a unique 3 channel system featuring his RM-30 speakers. --Rod

Also, Keith Herron showing with Alon speakers. This set-up was clearly stunning in it's ability to convey space and pace. Walker Audio, with the Viva amp and Zingali speakers playing 45 rpm test pressings had a great reach out and touch quality . For those interested in single driver speakers, the Fostex room was a must-hear. Lastly, EveAnna Manley's gear matched with Coincident speakers delivered visceral bass with well-integrated mids and highs. With Isreal Blume playing DJ, it was easy to linger way too long in their shared space. --Stephaen
