So I hop on Southwest on a whim and join my friend Jack at CES for Thurs. and Fri. I had never been to the show, so I spent less time than I liked going around Alexis Park and the Convention Center. I saw a lot and tried to hear a lot, though with a short schedule, it is hard to spend time to really get a sense of the products. Quick things I liked:1. Never heard of Margules audio from Mexico. They had a number of tube amps, preamps and speakers. They were amongst the best sounding setup of all that I saw at the show and at pretty good prices for high-end. All I can say is that they were very musical. URL was http://www.margules.com.mx
2. Cary 5.1 room - I did not know they did a 5.1 system in SS, no less. Running through the monitor audio speakers, this was a great sounding setup. I could be happy with this.
3. RedRose - Their new classic speaker was amazingly fast. They played a bunch of percussion pieces and the attacks were powerful. All through the new integrated amp with only 50wpc.
4. Joseph Audio RM33si - these were just smooth and natural. A really pleasing presentation of sound - not hyper-real or hi-fi like some of the others I heard.
5. Cary rocket-88. Great soundstage and smooth presentation through the expensive ($20K Joseph Audio top of the line) speakers.
6. AudioNote UK - all I can say is that the all tube, all analogue setup sounded creamy. Luscious and smooth sound from this room.
7. German Physik - had never heard one before the show - very real sounding upper frequencies. Not exactly my kind of sound, but the maracas in a demo were eerily in the room.
8. ProAc - had never heard these in person either, but they disappear in the room. I could not tell where they were when I closed my eyes.
9. Tact - I heard and saw the RCS2.2 in the main hall - bad place to make judgements, but this is a great idea and the build and sound was also impressive. Too bad they did not setup at Alexis too (or I missed them there).
People were very nice and I heard that it was a pretty good show from everyone I asked. I hope that everyone who went or participated enjoyed it as much as I did. Next time I go, I will give it 3 or 4 days to see everything.
