More CES

Ron Welborne and his lovely wife, Dana with their new Maya Horn System. Yes, Virginia, Lowthers can sound excellent. Whether the Oris 150 or the Tact room correction system was the key, this was one of the best systems at THE SHOW. Priced at $14,000 a pair, the horns have a sensitivity of 106db and include a horn loaded McCauley 18" bass driver extending low end response to 40hz. But the real highlight in the room were Ms. Welborne's cookies, yum!

The horns were powered by the Yote 2A3 amps ($3,900). Both products will be sold in retail channels under the Moondog Audio name.

Proving that high powered sand amps can sound like SETs is John Ulrick of Spectron with the Musician II, 500 wpc at $3,500-3,999 depending on options. It's a digital, Class D amp that accepts either analog or digital inputs. The system was connected to Von Schwiekert VR-5 HSR speakers producing a liquid sound that completely amazed us.

Gordon Rankin of Wavelength, pictured with his new Venus 45 Silver SET amp ($15K) and an official Asylum tuning puck.

Elina Lamm proudly displaying yet another patented Asylum tuning puck. This device was found to work equally well a top speakers or SET transformers. Lamm's room featured Kharma speakers and while incredibly expensive, both rooms had some of the best sound of the show.

Do power cords matter? Here's the back of the Lamm ML1 power amp that was connected to the Kharma Exquisite, $90K, speakers.

Dennis Had of Cary Audio was showing off his new Rocket 88 amps.

Priced at $2,500, the Rocket 88 uses KT-88 tubes to deliver 20 wpc in triode mode or 40 wpc in ultralinear with enough juice to power the big B&W Nataulis speakers quite nicely in triode mode.

Plinius was showing their new multi-channel amp that can be fitted with from 1 to 6 channels of 200 watts power. Peter Thomson is shown holding on of the plug in amp modules. The amp weighs in at a hefty 135 pounds and will be priced around $8.5K with 6 channels installed.

Oh yeah, another turntable company, Avid's Acutus ($10K) both sounded and looked stunning. The company has been selling the products in the UK since 1995.

New comer, Amphion from Finland, had us mesmorized with their Xenon speaker. From just $3,600 in birch or $3,150 in black or grey finishes, this was a must listen product that competes well with products at 2 to 3 times it's price. It's an attractive product that is well designed and emensely listenable.

And it's back to the show.....
