A Taste of CES

Bobby Palkovic of Merlin changing records

The Merlin/Joule Electra room was one of the better sounding rooms at Alexis Park and considering a nearly reasonable price for the gear, outstanding.

Brian Cheney of VMPS with his Ribbon Monitor 40 at $4,600 a pair. The system
was driven by an $8K Krell transport feeding a modified ART DIO DAC and Ampzilla 2000
monoblocks. Again, another excellent sounding room that was only improved after
extensive tweaking with our custom a^2 tuning pucks.

No, these aren't air conditioners, but a new product line from Niro Nakamichi. The
big one of the right is available as monoblocks at around $22K, I don't recall, but that
might have been each!

The Niro integrated comes at a more real world price of about $7K for 150wpc and remote.
It did quite well with the B&W speakers though the looks are something you'll either
love or hate.

The Acapella Campanile won my award for the tallest speaker at just about 8 feet and
priced at $31K. The sound was big and explosive though suffered with a relatively
small room and 'head in the vice' imaging, not really my cup of tea.

Carfrae's horn with Lowther DX4 drivers proved that one could get reasonable bass from
a Lowther. Dynamic sound, beautiful cabinet work and an errily presence that could be
called screechy.

Now for a couple of show stoppers:

Here's a shot of the famed, Oakroot, with his soon to be acquired SoundLab Millennium-1 speakers.
Priced at $14,700 and extending to 28hz, these panels litterally shook everything in the room. And no,
Oakroot really isn't 5' tall, those babies are 7 footers! Come on, Oak, we've got more to see, you can
come back tomorrow.

No one believed that these little speakers could do the big sound that they do. The Audio Physic
Avante's at $11K aided by the Minos sub at $5K and fed by a Herron Audio preamp and phono stage and a new
pair of digital monoblocks were simply unbeliveable.

Well, it's back to THE SHOW.
