Desperately seeking solution: could a dirty lens cause distortion?

Hi all,

Some of you may have noticed my running from asylum to asylum trying to figure out what might be the cause of my brand new system sounding downright bad on select favorite CD's...I swear this isn't mere break-in awkwardness, it's baaaad...but only sometimes. Most other times, it's great.
I've suspected my source, as it's the lousiest part of the set-up, and today it occured to me that I might be on the right track, but I've ignored something more glaring, namely that I haven't actually cleaned the lens in, gulp, six months. What would be the result of a dirty lens? The thing has been having major problems reading CD's, but for some reason this just didn't click with me; I put it down to the player being a piece of crap.
So, as per my title, could a dirty lens cause distortion? By 'distortion' I mean, specifically, a kind of dramatic smearing effect that sounds almost like the treble is burnt out or something.

It's wrecking my days, because rather than just avoiding the offending discs I obsessively sit with them, torturing myself, trying to figure out what the hell is going on. I really don't think it's the recordings; it sounds like the speakers are screwed up.

I'll shut up now. Lemme know what you think. Thanks in advance for any advice.

P.S. What's a decent lens cleaner, anyway?
