Yes transports do make a difference. It is not difficult, in my experience, (given the components) to demonstrate that a great transport into an average DAC sounds better then an average transport into a great DAC. Something is going on other than jitter rejection.
Coincidentally both of your transports have Sony mechanisms. Purists may hold that a pure CD/SACD transport should be better than a DVD one (everything being equal) but if you can't hear the difference then why worry?
As for the Marantz it sounds like the OPU has packed up. These dual laser jobs don't seem to have great longevity, I have been through quite a few over the years. Even if the lasers function OK the mechanism for swapping between the two can be prone to failure. If you want the Marantz fixed you , or the repairer, need to find a Sony KHM - 230AAA optical pickup unit ( my information source advises). No idea what the availabilty is.
