Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: Which One?

The GCD 600 uses the Philips TDA1541 16-bit DAC chip, in a 4X oversampling configuration. I was disappointed to see that Adcom didn't pay extra for the "crown" version of the DAC. At the moment, I don't remember if it's the original 1541, or the 1541A. Adcom doesn't use the "matching" Phillips filter chip (SAA 7220), or if they do, I didn't recognize it on the circuit board.

I buy every GCD 600 I find for sale at a decent price. I walk away from the expensive ones, though. I have two that output a proper digital signal from the coax digital output jack, but have no analog output at all. I suspect popped analog transformers, or perhaps fuses. One of the fully-functional units has the white faceplate and buttons. There's a black one that's the source for my garage system, and one of the no-analog units provides a digital signal to my home theater system pre/pro; in that application I don't need the analog board or DAC chip at all. There's a few more on the shelf for "later".

The GCD 700 is similar to the 600, but uses a Burr-Brown "20-bit" DAC chip, and 8X oversampling. I don't own one.

The '600 is usually built in Japan. The '700 is usually built in Communist China. I would say that COO listed above is absolute, but there may be exceptions I don't know about.
