The extra bits go deep into the noise floor. Switching randomly on and off.

A 20 bit DAC goes to -120 dB. So whether it's 4 extra bits or 12 extra bits, IMO they don't do anything to enhance the music signal.

And since there are 8 extra bits switching on and off per sample (relative to 24 bits), that's more RFI generation.
