It's an excellect chip, but generalizations are problematic as the results vary according to implementation. In a DIY build of the Twisted Pear Buffalo DAC I've passed through multiple configurations of the ESS Reference Sabre 9018 up to a battery-powered, shunt-regulated, dual-mono configuration with a balanced silver transformer output stage. The discrete shunt regulators and dual-mono configuration made quite a difference. Neither of these features are included in some of the commercially avialable CDPs. This is about the best RBCD I've heard. However, RBCD on my Sony SCD-1 with the same power mods and analog section comes quite close. I have yet to try a hi-res input into the ESS 9018-- which is really its principal reason for being.
