What a drag! That's got to be very disheartening in the midst of your speaker search. I wouldn't try any DIY surgery. If at all possible, I'd recommend calling your dealer to replace or repair the unit. If this isn't possible and you are unhappy with the Pioneer, you could keep it for video use only, or replace it with a CD player from Rotel -- they make high-value-for dolllar, generally reliable gear. The 971 gets a lot of good press. I've heard it with SF Signums, which are very revealing, and it was very musical and un-CD sounding.
