MIT Terminator 2 vs. Kimber Kable 8TC bi-wire speaker cables 2nd edition

I posted an inquiry here a while ago asking for input comparing these two cables. I was using B&W Matrix 801 Series II speakers with Kimber Kable 8TC in bi-wire configuration (blue and black insulation). I felt there was a bit of "glare" in the upper frequencies lending a bit of unpleasant hardness to the overall sound.

Several responders suggested the MIT Terminator 2s would likely lessen this quality without overly-muffling or rounding out the sound.

Yesterday, the MIT Terminator 2 bi-wire speaker cables arrived. What a contrast! The MITs are incredibly thick and unwieldy, with inflexible ends to connect to the other components. They are also 15 foot cables, more than I really need, but they are what I was able to find.

I have just done a preliminary bit of listening and wanted to provide some initial impressions. The MITs are, indeed, providing less glare. That I like very much, but I thought they might be a bit too much of a good thing--obscuring some detail.

Today I listened to "Across the Lines" from Tracey Chapman's first CD (Elektra 9 60774-2) through the MITs. There is a very subtle guitar ornament in the background. It was nearly inaudible. I thought I remembered that this passage was much louder and crisper in the past, so I thought the MITs were dulling this unacceptably. I switched back to the Kimbers and--lo and behold--the passage was just as low in audibility there. Plus, the vocals were a bit edgier. So, back to the MITs. Now my impression was that there was actually greater audibility of these guitar accents with the MITs and the edgy quality of the vocals was lessened. Satisfying.

This serves to remind me that my audio memory can be very easily fooled, and that direct A/B comparisons of the kind I just described can be helpful in sorting out what's really going on. It seems to me also that using shorter selections of music are better for this purpose than lengthier ones. One can more easily sense the changes.

I will report again after I have time to listen some more and would welcome comments on either my discoveries or methods.

Best,

George Roland
