Strange connections

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

I just purchased a home with a in-wall and in-ceiling speakers throughout the house. Two cables that I believe are the speaker cables are sticking through the wall in a cabinet. The connectors are unlike any I've seen, so I imagine they are some obsolete propriety system. The system likely dates to the late 80s. See attached. Any ideas?
